CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM & PUBLIC SAFETY

Since becoming a State Senator, Gustavo Rivera has worked to implement policies that both safeguard public safety while addressing some of the practices that lead to the unjust treatment of New Yorkers of color. Gustavo also knows that having a strong relationship between our community and law enforcement is crucial to having safer streets and a safer community.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

  • Enacted the strictest gun safety laws in the country and secured tens of millions of dollars for gun violence intervention programs, hospital-based gun violence prevention, and community services.

  • Coordinated with city agencies, law enforcement, and community-based organizations to triage neighborhood issues and quality of life concerns.

  • Cleaned up syringe litter with local syringe exchange programs to combat the spread of HIV and Hepatitis C while addressing the needs of community members with substance use disorder.

  • Secured $6 million to transform the Fulton Correctional Facility in Crotona Park into the most unique reentry facility to help formerly incarcerated Bronxites transition back to the community successfully.

  • Invested over $2 Million in revitalizing Washington Park in Belmont to provide youth in the neighborhood a safe place after the tragic murder of Lesandro "Junior" Guzman-Feliz.
