EDUCATION

Prior to running for the State Senate, Gustavo Rivera taught at Hunter College and then Pace University as a professor of Political Science. As an educator, Gustavo feels strongly that every child deserves a quality education. As a Senator, Gustavo Rivera has visited dozens of elementary, middle schools and high schools to talk to students, teachers and parents about community and education-related concerns.  He also regularly teaches seminars on government and the importance of civic participation.

Accomplishments:

  • Helped secure over $300 million in State funding for Universal Pre-K for New York City.

  • Has fought for the state to pay the school’s in the 33rd Senate District the $131 million owed to them under the Campaign for Fiscal Equity Settlement.

  • Has been a strong supporter of CUNY and SUNY.

  • Advocated for struggling schools to get resources to become community schools so that students could have access to wrap around services that will help strengthen their academic performance.

  • Sponsored an array of educational programs, such as a Thanksgiving Day Creative Writing Competition, Summer Reading Program and a Earth Day Poster Contest.
