Gustavo Rivera knows that our criminal justice system does not treat all New Yorkers as equals. Since becoming a State Senator, he has worked to implement policies that both safeguard public safety while addressing some of the practices that lead to the unjust treatment of a number of New Yorkers. Gustavo also knows that having strong relationship between our community and police is crucial to having safer streets and a safer community.


  • Passed the Charitable Bail Law, which has helped hundreds of Bronxites post bail for misdemeanors, keeping them out jail while awaiting trial.

  • Secured $6 million to transform the Fulton Correctional Facility in Crotona Park into a unique reentry facility for those returning to the city from prison.

  • Fought to pass a bill to give the Attorney General jurisdiction to investigate cases involving a police officer that resulting in the death or injury of a citizen.

  • Helped pass the New York SAFE Act, which put in place the strictest gun control laws in the country.

  • Hosted a series of public safety workshops on issues of bullying, gang violence, stop and frisk and domestic violence.

  • Attends precinct council meetings and maintains constant contact with Commanding Officers in the Bronx regarding crime and crime prevention
